Obscurity Points: Chris Weisman

The prolific Chris Weisman seems to be something of an underground legend from what I’ve been reading about him. Based in Battleboro, Vermont, Weisman has been steadily releasing all kinds of tapes and underground CDs for a while now, the only one of which I’ve heard is the 88-song Maya Properties release that you can download for free off the OSR Tapes website. Clearly a gifted musician, Weisman’s songs usually are kind of whispery, well written folk-pop, though that’s not to say that he stays within those bounds, and one section of the Maya Tapes is all weird MIDI-synth sounding stuff, while other songs get noisy or more fun than the rest. In any case, it’s always great to stumble upon musicians like him just making beautiful music and releasing it through underground channels – keeping it secret, keeping it safe 😛

Crazy experimental Austin duo Zorch caught my attention today on Portals – they make music as awesome as their name.

Phedre

Phenomenal new song and video from my fellow Torontonians in the sampletastic Phedre. Apparently this new song takes issue with the Canadian government’s treatment of First Nations’ peoples, as they state in the YouTube video description: “This song was inspired by Chief Spence of the Attawapiskat First Nation and her fight against the apathy of the Canadian government towards First Nations communities in Canada. We pride ourselves on being a progressive country, but the repeated marginalization of First Nations communities here is horrific. We acknowledge that this video was filmed on unceded Indigenous Land.”

Also:

“SEIZURE WARNING This video contains strobe effects and may not be suitable for those who are affected by them.”

Also features a Wendigo. It’s off their new album Golden Age, which drops October 1st. (via AdHoc)

Thought this blog was dead? It’s not. Right now we’re just doing stretches of 3 weeks at a time on base, and I have no access to a computer there, so yeah, can’t update. But now I’m off for something like an extended weekend, so I can blog! Hurray! I found Ann Arbour-based emogazers Pity Sex on Pitchfork where their album Feast Of Love got a deece review. Checked ’em out and yeah, they’re really cool. And now I pass on to thee, the music…
