Have You Heard The New…Grizzly Bear?

Well, well, well…look who’s back in town. It’s beloved Brooklyn band Grizzly Bear. And with a new album dropping September 18th. Bet you guys think you’re sooooo cool, don’t ya? Well…maybe you are.

The first track off the as-yet-untitled-album is “Sleeping Ute”, a song with a title inspired by a Ute Indian legend. Way to fight the pretentious Brooklyn hipster stereotypes, guys. Luckily the song is pretty solid, though perhaps an odd choice for a single as it focuses more on ambient force and those beautiful textures of sound the band is really good at than melody or structure.

As a forerunner of the album it suggests that the band hasn’t changed too much in terms of sound, style and quality, though perhaps it may hint at a change in songwriting priorities and direction. Veckatimest had some really well constructed, exceptional pop songs (if you can even qualify them as such) – perhaps this one will focus more on interesting sounds and more complex construction? Or perhaps “Sleeping Ute” isn’t reflective of the whole? I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see. So far, thumbs up.
