Yeah, yeah, the end of the year stuff is coming soon. Jeez, everyone’s rushing to be like, “here’s my list! here’s my list!” – December’s not even half over yet people. Whatever. Anyways. Gold Soundz is going a bit more in the weird shit direction of sites like Altered Zones (RIP) and Weird Canada for 2012. Gonna be less pop and folk, more shoegaze, weird indie, etc. This will balance out the Toronto blog scene a bit, with the newly transplanted Weird Canada, Max Mohenu‘s excellent Diamond A/T/L/A/S and Gold Soundz taking up the left of the dial stuff, and Chromewaves, Indie Music Filter, Buying Shots For Bands, and other friends taking up the more accessible stuff. Our latest mix – covering the stuff I was listening to in November – reflects the shift. I’m also happy to say that a lot of friends and Torontonians made the mix this month purely due to musical quality, not personal connection, so kudos to all of you.

Toronto’s Blood Rexdale And The Walls Are Blonde is the project of a dude named David Kleiser. Live and on some EP’s the band is kind of a lo-fi dream-pop, shoegaze deal, but on his latest CD-R/free online release, the 21-track (25 when you dl it) Heading Off To Montreal, he seems to just toss down a bunch of fun songs, sketches, and covers, with a little help from friends in the scene. It might be a bit long for front-to-back listening, but the freewheeling feeling that abounds and fun, interesting material make it a charmer.

In honour of the 20th anniversary of My Bloody Valentine‘s masterpiece album Loveless, we, the indie-rockers of Toronto, would like to show our gratitude with this covers compilation. You can download it for free off soundcloud, but please support the original artists who created the masterpiece by heading over to your local record store and purchasing the album on vinyl. It’s totally worth it.
All of Toronto is also welcome to come to the all-ages 20th anniversary celebration party we’ll be putting on at the Toronto Underground Cinema this Friday (November 4th).
Don’t let the name fool you – the Toronto-based Blood Rexdale are about as bloody as My Bloody Valentine (which reminds me, when I went to the MBV concert in Toronto a couple years ago, I bought a T-shirt from a dude outside, just as a souvenir really, cuz it was a big blood stain design and looked like something more fitting for an emo band than the definitive shoegazers). These guys (like those guys) are ambient-dream-rock-shoegazey stuff. Heartbeat Hotel‘s Chris Lyons (who plays in Blood Rexdale and serves as producer) hit me up with the EP the other day and it’s great, you can download it off their bandcamp.
