Labour Day

Although I don’t get to see them as much as I’d like to (or at all these days really, being halfway across the world and all…), the Toronto-based gang of scruffians known as Labour Day are good peeps and increasingly excellent music makers. Their new EP In Good Standing is a huge leap forward for the crew, with everything sounding bigger, tighter, hookier and more cohesive and aggressive than ever. For relz – this shit is the shit.

Gotta give shoutouts to Katie from Labour Day (friends of blog) for posting a link to Sackville, NS goof-punks The Mouthbreathers‘ bandcamp page. I’m feeling this shit. Appetite For Deconstruction, oh you college kids…

Friend of the site Toronto bed-gazer Philip James (also of booze-gazers Labor Day) has a new EP up on his bandcamp called Mind Drone. As with previous EPs, it continues to improve upon its predecessors.

Labour Day

Toronto indie-rocking buddies of mine Labour Day have an interesting dynamic going on. They have two frontmen: one, Philip James, is kind of shoegaze/samplegaze lo-fi bedroom wizard; the other, Robert Vella, is a ragged, bearded Titus Andronicus-loving chugger. It’s an unexpected combo, but they’ve somehow made it work beautifully on their first self-titled EP (available now as a free download off their bandcamp), colouring the soundscape with ambient, reverb and delay-drenched guitars, as the rhythm sections rages forward with noisy, abrasive strength. The two tracks below showcase each songwriter in his element.

Labour Day – Sib Flea

Labour Day – Great Expectations

Come see them March 3rd at Tiger Bar in Toronto.
