Man meets Bear

Utah-via-Toronto songwriter and old friend of the blog Man meets Bear released another naturalistic wonder yesterday June 15th, his latest album Starfishes. It’s one of the more meditative works in his discography; most of the songs are smeared ambient soundscapes-as-songs, progressing in slow-motion but with a finger still placed on the idea of pop composition.

Ontario-based experimental-folk-naturalist project Man meets Bear released its latest album this week, the wonderful, impressionistic I Want to Be a Gallant Rider Like My Father Was Before Me. Gallant Rider…‘s songs take the form of ambient, meditative soundscapes. The album showcases a change of focus, but not a change of sound for project mastermind Soren Brothers, as Gallant Rider… continues to haunt the same primeval psychic space he explored on previous albums, but without much approaching pop song formats.

Collapsing Opposites is the idiosyncratic pop project of Vancouver’s Ryan McCormick. Recently, he released a new album called Dreamland on my friend Soren little Brothers‘ label Ur Audiovisual. It’s apparently inspired by some heavy life events he went through last year, including the birth of his first child and the death of his brother. I haven’t heard the whole thing, but I liked the song below, “cops get local music 2097”. Hopefully, one day, I’ll get to hear the whole album…

Eiyn Sof

It’s been a while, but Toronto’s mysterious “post-folk” bedroom artist Eiyn Sof (the project of one Melissa Boraski) has finally gotten around to putting out a new release. The Chthonic Tongue is a super minimalist work. Definitely not a collection of ‘songs’ by any stretch, the EP is much artsier and more ambient than what she’s released before. It requires a bit of patience, but solid if you’re in the right mood for it.

The Chthonic Tongue EP is out now on my friend Soren Little Brothers (aka Man meets Bear)’s label Ur Records.

Friend of the site and Ontario-based naturalist psych-folk artist Man meets Bear returns with a new album, Huronian Cadence, May 5th via his own Ur label. Following the band-ready Buffalo Comets and the folkier, mostly-acoustic Waagaaskingaa, Huronian Cadence finds Man meets Bear in fairly adventurous, experimental form, playing around with his usual aesthetics as well as new electronic and drone elements.
