Young Guv And The Scuzz

June 3rd, 2012 | Mp3 Posts | 1 Comment

My musical hero Ben Cook of Toronto’s Marvelous Darlings, Fucked Up, The Bitters, blah blah blah is finally releasing a new full-length EP under his solo power-punk pseudonym Young Guv (and he’ll be joined by his sometimes-backing band, The Scuzz). Looks like the album EP will be called A Love Too Strong, and it drops on July 24th. Should be pretttttty cool.

Actual Water

Actual Water are a Toronto punk-pop band that play surprisingly seldom and have gotten surprisingly little attention considering how killer the music they make is and the big ups (and production work) they get from Fucked Up/Marvelous Darlings/Young Governor local punk-rock genius Ben Cook. They’ve got a new 7″ dropping tomorrow at their release show/Marvelous Darlings album release show spectacular going down at Sneaky Dees. Here’s the A-side, which you can also order from Plastic Idol if you can’t make the show.

(Real) May Mix

June 9th, 2011 | The Mix | 0 Comments

So, the way I was doing things before, this should be the June Mix and it should contain a bunch of cool tracks that came out in the month that just ended, May. I decided that was a little confusing though – the June mix shouldn’t contain May music, it should contain June music, right? So I’m switching the system right now.

The (Real) May Mix featured below is a little bit of a weird bag. It’s got a lot of lo-fi rock, but some electronic-y stuff. It makes for a bit of an interesting contrast, but I think it’s all really cool music, so, yeah, it’s down there if you want to check it out.

1. White Fang – Grateful To Shred

2. Feel Alright – Winter Goth

3. Physics – Ice 7

4. Moonface – Fast Peter

5. Gardens & Villa – Star Fire Power

6. When Saints Go Machine – Kelly

7. Rituals – Endless Mess

8. Sloan – Shadow Of Love

9. Young Governor – Bedroom Eyes

10. Huckleberry Friends – Vision

Actual Water

Actual Water is this cool noise-pop/shoegaze-y band based in Toronto. They’ve been steadily building up a bit of a rep around town, and now Ben Cook (who I’ve written about once or twice) is releasing a new song of theirs called “Latoya” on 7″ as part of his Scotch Tapes label’s Lathe Cut Series. It’s definitely the poppiest thing I’ve heard from the band and really freakin’ good. You should also check out the latest release by Ben’s Young Governor project here. (Via No Guv No Luv)
